I live in the small market town Bacup Lancashire,10 miles from Manchester in the North of England. We have a small pond 3ft x 3ft which is not in a good condition. It has been green for over 1yr despite me trying many suggestions from many people. We decided to fill it in but when we emptied it to12 inches of water there were 2 little frogs huddled together! Didn't have the heart to discard them so we replaced green water with fresh rain water.
Unfortunately water remains green, although frogs still active and we saw several tadpoles today.I am taking a sample of the water to be tested .We have some oxygenating plants and a small pump . Not sure what else to do.

to our group! Do you have a filter? Sounds like it was built to be a small garden pond. So nice of you to save the little frogs home.

welcome and guessing no filter but to clear up water all you need is a hose from the pump to a crate filled with quilt batting and you will need to clean it often at first .But to be honest frogs like green water so they can hide and make babies they don't really care about water quality they just want water to lay eggs .

If you want clear water you will need an adequate pump and filter. aeration will also help. You will want to get as much debris off the bottom as possible as well. As the debris breaks down, it turns into ammonia or phosphate, which the green algae "eat". A filter will help remove all this gunk and it will also establish a colony of bacteria that will convert the ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate. If that fails, a UV sterilizer will clean up green water.

I am glad you decided to keep it. To help the water quality, like others said, you'll need a pump and a filter. Also, do you have any plants in the pond? They can also help the pond in different ways. I'd love to see a photo so we know what you're working with
