Hi. Just started my 1st pond ever. It is small. 2 preforms conected with a waterfall. The bid one is between 300-400 gallons. I have been to the water garden places where I live and have read a ton online. No idea what I am doing, which I think shows since my pond has been up for 3 days, and is completely green.

Welcome to our group!

Your pond is probably cycling, it takes time to build up the right stuff to keep it from getting green. What sort of filter do you have?

:) welcome aboard! :regular_waving_emot
Did anyone tell you that plants feed of the same thing that the algae feed off of of, the more plants the less green water. LOL I had to add that in there, I already answered your other post. Give it time and it will come around,

Thanks everyone. I wish I would have found this forum before I started my pond. I added an album of my pond project so far. Addy1, I built my filter myself sort of combining the skippy filter and a homemade waterfall weir/spillway I found on youtube.

Hi Jen welcome. As other people have pointed out the green will disappear when you have built up enough good bacteria and the plants are helping out at the same time. Hopefully you have not put fish in yet. I would recommend you read up how to cycle a pond if you haven't already. Green water is very common in the beginning.

Keith, I did not read up on "cycling a pond" beforehand. So I googled it quickly after reading your post. I have basically been going by what the water garden shop has told me at this point. I think it's the same thing. I got everything set up and have been adding bacteria to the pond daily (the pond store said every other day, but then I read online somewhere it was better to do it daily) I started all of this Monday. I set myself back a little I think Tuesday, because my filter media looked like it was filled with dirt from the water. I assumed this couldn't already be a bacteria colony that fast so I took it all out and rinsed it off. Haven't touched it since though. I do have fish in the pond. 9 very small goldfish, all around 2" I spoke to the fish specialist at the store asking if I should wait for fish or if I could add them now and she said go ahead. So yep they are there. I barely have any plants at this point, just 4 water hyacinth, will hopefully be getting lillies this wknd. I have stopped feeding the fish though since someone here recommended that I do. I think they are eating the plants anyway. This morning the water still looked terrible, but I could just barely see the gold of the fish, which unless I am imagining things, must be an improvement. Yesterday I couldn't see them at all unless they came to the surface or were right under the falls. I've been gone all day today, didn't get back till after dark, so I am eager to see tomorrow morning if there is anymore improvement.

Get a test kit jen, if you do not have one. I don't remember if you do. Keep an eye on your water levels. With a new pond and fish it can go bad on you and hurt the fish.

I will have to get one soon then. I've exceded my pond budget for the week though so it will have to wait. It must be getting better though. Today the water looks more brown then green. Still far from clear, but I can see the fish. I can't see the rocks on the bottom though. Is it normal for it to go from green to brown?

Hi Jen, The green water will not hurt your fish. Addy is correct to get a test kit. You need to monitor your ammonia and nitrites very carefully in the beginning and may also have to do partial water changes if your readings get too high. As the pond starts to cycle then your plants will use the nitrates and help keep it in check. The good bacteria you are adding may give the pond a kick start but it will still have to build up beneficial bacteria on it's own so I would not go too crazy about adding it once you have done so already. Leave your filters alone as much as possible and never clean with chlorinated water as this will kill the bacteria.Usually it takes 3-6 weeks to fully cycle. Avoiding feeding is the correct advice because there is plenty of natural food for your fish already in the pond with all the algae. Feeding them now will just create wastes that will go un-processed and may actually cause diseasei n your fish and kill them. Getting your pond to cycle takes some time and patience, but eventually when it is in balance it will make both your fish and you very happy! Good Luck!

?? Rocks on the bottom?? In most cases this is not recommended, the rocks on the bottom trap fish poop and gunk giving the wrong kind of bacteria a place to grow, In a preformed pond you really want to have flat bottom so that it's easier to suck or net the gunk off the bottom when that time comes.

welcome jenh and thats normal and as time goes it will pass .They tell you can add fish just to sell them ,they don't care .I waited 2 months before adding fish to my 1st pond and then when I built the second one I waited almost 3 months because it was farming season here and the water kept getting dirt from the air .Lets hope your pond cycles fast .What kind of filter do you have and show us pics for sure ,it helps .
