Hi! I am new to the forum. I have a small backyard pond that needs cleaning before the mosquitoes take over! I am in Dallas. Since March 1 I have been working with a company that has canceled and canceled on me - 4 times actually. I give up and need a recommendation from people who know a reliable complany. Thanks for any info!

BKay it would be far cheaper for you to invest in a pond Vac rather than pay a company to do it for you they are nowadays relitively inexpensive and a couple of hours of you time will see the job done just as good if not better than one of these compamys .
I'm a disabled Veteran but have worked out a method of cleaning everything to do with our pond on a routine basis that requires very little of my time and no effort whatsoever.
When you build a pond or take one on it just doent look after itself it has to be maintained throughout the year .
Do yourself a favour invest in a pond vac save a fortune in companys who more than probably qoute over the odds anyway

Goldfish and koi love eating bugs. I have never had a mosquito issue with my pond except when our village sprayed for mosquitoes and it killed a bunch of our baby frog tadpoles. If you are really concerned about mosquitoes try to lure some dragonflies to your pond. They can eat up to 2000 mosquitoes per day!

Once you get it cleaned and put fish in they will remove all skeeters. How big is this pond and can't you just clean it yourself? I would just drain it all if it's really nasty and sludge it out w/ buckets, plastic shovel (plastic so as not to tear liner),pool net, hands, whatever works, wipe it down real well and hose it off and get it spankin shiny and start from the beginning. If it's just too much for you to handle then I guess you must resort to forking out the big bucks to get it done. While you wait you could throw in some of those skeeter dunk deals that kill the things. They come in different variations of solid to granular and perhaps even a liquid. Supposed to be fish safe.

If any get laid in our stream they get flushed when it runs, I have not seen any biters growing.

That is a great little article WB - and it's true. Just because MOST of the water is moving, doesn't mean ALL of the water is moving. My neighbor brought up the mosquito issue too and I pointed out his numerous bird baths filled with water. He said "but I dump those every few days". Which actually he does maybe once a week, but in any case mosquito larva can hatch within 24 hours. Then I mentioned how our pond would attract those mosquito mamas who were going to find SOMEPLACE to lay their eggs anyway - and guaranteed him that our fish would take care of the larva. He went away happy!

We have lots of water here, between the ponds and stream. I have not seen a mosquito in years. I think the frogs, dragon flys, birds etc eat them all up

We definitely have mosquitos, but no more than before we had a pond. If they do lay in the pond or bog, the fish and frogs take care of the larva. We never see any.

I've been considering a pond vac. Does it remove algae affixed to the bottom of the liner? Currently I'm netting it out and cleaning skimmer etc, but have so much more ( or at least it's visible) than before we removed the gravel.
