I’ve just bought a house and it has a backyard pond which is about 40 feet in length and has a waterfall at ththe top which leads to a pond that is about 4 feet deep.

I noticed the original pump had been disconnected and the previous owner put a aquascape pump and ran a hose to the top which bypasses the waterfall resovoir.

Question is what kind of pump do I need to hook up to the plumbing which leads to thme waterfall that is shown in this picture? It’s been disconnected. Just looking for a recommendation.

Probably a pump that can hook up to a 2" line. I have that exact check valve, I think aquascape makes them. So, that aquascape pump should hook up to it. Just go to the local hardware store that has plumbing supplies, they should have what you need to attach it.

If you get a new pump make sure it doesn't exceed the capacity of the skimmer box. You have a big pond, so in order to get the circulation you need (1.5-2x gph pond capacity) you will need a pretty strong pump.

Ok. Thanks. The skimmer has two openings, one has a pipe facing downward and the other is a hole where it appears you can screw something into it.

Which pipe hooks up to the pump and what do you do with the other one?

Can't really see the other hole, most skimmers have 2 holes for pipe to go through. If one is not going to be use, it can be plugged.

The pipe facing down is a check valve that should have threads on the bottom part, the pump should hook onto that.

Edit .....does the pond have a bottom drain, is the other hole lower in the box. If so, that is just left open as it is pulling water from wherever the bottom drain was installed.

It’s the hole about two inches from the floater. Thanks for your help, I’m a rookie.

Hello and welcome! We have a lot of people who inherit ponds with their homes — that’s so cool! Would LOVE to see some pictures of the whole pond! Is it a double pond or does it have a stream leading to the waterfall? Are there currently any fish, and if so, what kind? It sounds like it would be big enough for koi!

Here’s a picture of it a few years ago, the previous owners didn’t seem to invest very much time in it. My goal is to bring it back to life as it was when it was built. I’ve heard the first owners kept koi in the pond, maybe one day after I get it back in shape.

Tough to see from ththe pics, but there’s a pretty large, maybe 6 to 8 feet above the pond, waterfall way in the back.

Looks nice and love the tropical look! I love palm trees and have a Hardy Chinese Windmill palm next to my pond.
