Hello, I'm sort of new to pond maintenence. The previous owners did not maintain the pond so it fell on me to get it up and running.. and so i have.. well almost. I have 2 waterfalls and only 1 works consistently. After the filter b is back washed both run powerfully for about 30 mins then one of the waterfalls stopsand the other slows down.
My pool guy says I should get a bigger filter (current one is a 16inch hayward )... the pool store guy says I don't need a filter he says the current filter needs to be moved underground, and someone else told me I just need a prefilter.... help what should I do?

Is that a typical pool filter using sand? Those are not suitable for ponds and clog very quickly.

Depending on the size of your pond and the size of the filter, you might be able to use the filter if you change out the sand for another type of media.

There is info online on how to do this. It's not difficult, but does require some drilling to enlarge the holes in the pipes inside the filter.

Hello @cocopb,

Probably some of the more experienced ponders will have more to say about your plumbing system, but it looks to me like the pond is small enough that you could make do with a standard submerged pump and some water plants to filter the water. If you want to add fish later on, you would need a bit more filtration (search this forum for "bog filter" for some ideas on inexpensive DIY filter systems).

Cheers!

You are correct it is a sand filter. This makes sense. I will check out some online videos. Thanks so much.

We used this thread to convert a Heyward filter to a K1 media filter:

Or you can just buy a pond filter and not go to the trouble!
