I've read some great posts and useful information so decided to join up.
We inherited a mature pond when we bought our house in England about 5 years ago. It's circular, about 7 metres across and holds around 5000 gallons. We have approximately 200 fish with plenty of varieties.
I think we've been lucky to get a really well set up pond because it has literally looked after itself. Apart from backwashing the filter and feeding the fish we've never had to do much. The plants take over about twice a year and need severly thinning out but otherwise we've just enjoyed watching the fish. We never had fish before so really we're not experienced at all but we've only had a half dozen die in 5 years so we must be doing something OK.
I look forward to learning plenty and will be posting a question about UV clarifiers soon as our old one has recently broken.
Best
