Hi everyone!

We have converted our in ground pool (9000ish gallons) to a backyard pond. We have seldom used the pool in the past several years and just maintained it to keep the mosquitos at bay. Fast forward to the beginning if this year we had a leak in the piping that shut the system down. Didn't have the time to fix it, so the water dechlorinated and around April we noticed tadpoles. At that point the lightbulb went off and we decided to go with nature.

We started this journey about a month ago. Fixed the leak, modified the filter to be a mechanical/biological filter, tested the water parameters and began adding fish and plants.

What was once a pain in the you-know-where is now our favorite hangout spot. We have a long ways to go, but are enjoying the journey so far!

For those requesting pics. Still working on clarity. Have a second pump/filter/UV arriving this weekend for reinforcements. Also going to try barley straw.

What you probably need are more plants and more shade. You can get both with floating plants and other plants the spread across the water surface. I wouldn't waste money on a UV filter. Spend that instead of floating plants, planters, and milk crates or PVC pipe that you can stack or built frames out of to get the correct depth in the shallow end for potted emergent/midlevel plants (since pools lack shelves you have to get creative sometimes). Most pond plant stores online break plants down by where they go in the water (depth wise or if they free float).
