Many go with old carpet under the liner. But never inside

Why carpet @DWN TO ERTH TERRYLEEFIRTH ? I’ll assume it’s to save money and reuse something that you already have. But is it really worth it? The very first thing that you put in your pond you’re gonna choose to do something to save money. Underlayment just isn’t that expensive in the overall scheme of pond building.

Having said that lots have done it before you and many have also used old blankets, newspaper, cardboard, etc. I’m sure they all work to some extent and honestly it’s something that many ponds may not even really need, but it’s more of an insurance policy. So if you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll never know whether it was a good decision or a bad one because it will never come into play.

Now let me add something that you did not ask. At the size of your pond you do not have a room for Koi. Please for the love of all that is holy, goldfish only.

Hello and welcome!

There is no rule that says you can’t use carpet. A lot of people do, and have no problem with it at all. While carpet can be used, I still prefer a good non-woven, geo textile layer under the liner (just my personal preference). A few issues that come to mind…..how will you make it stay up on the sides (and not slide or slump), and I’d be worried about any pieces of metal or other sharp things that could puncture the liner. Do you have rocky soil? Carpet could be good on the bottom.

What kind of liner have you ordered? Always remember that the liner (and the underlayment that protects it) are the biggest investment you will make for your pond. The last thing you ever want to happen…..is a liner puncture!

and welcome @DWN TO ERTH TERRYLEEFIRTH
I used carpet w/o any tacks, blankets, cardboard, towels etc. but my soil here is sandy and no rocks or sharp tree roots. My pond sides are slanted and I have a shelf and had no trouble w/any thing sliding down. Been good for 20+ years. If you add any big rocks inside your pond it would be good to use a cut piece or two or three more of extra liner to put under them to protect your liner. Better safe than sorry!

By the posted dimensions, this pond is almost 2700 gallons. Isn't that big enough for a few koi, like 3?

Anytime someone gives pond dimensions I assume we're losing gallons when you add underlayment, liner, rocks, etc. My pond is 13x17 and is roughly 2700 gallons when you factor all those things in.

I'd guess the OP will end up with more like 2000 gallons. A couple of koi or a whole herd of goldfish? I guess it's up to the individual!
