So I have made an extremely curious new friend since I put together my pond. I call him Verde he is a ruby throated humming bird with a green back. This is the oddest bird I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He come by ever afternoon to visit and hovers about 2 inches above the water looking down in. He will fly about a foot sometimes way closer to me while I sit next to the pond of I am fidgeting with this that or another thing. Will this harm my pond? (poop or any thing like that) is it normal for a humming bird to act like this? He is soooo friendly and I throughly enjoy his visits but if I have to I can try to shoo him away.

Thanks David! I know I had heard somewhere that the big birds poop could cause a problem (something about a bird feeder) but never heard any thing about humming birds.

you have to be careful with birds because if they hop from pond to pond they could be picking up diseases such as KHV which has the potential to wipe out your koi

Thanks c2c... I noticed yesterday that it's not just my friendly and fast little friend my pond is now beginning to attract the many small (what I call parking lot) birds. I also now have a blue bird in my yard UGH! I hate those loud buggers!

yeah i have a pair of mating (i think) ducks that are in my pond 5 or 6 times a day. poop everywhere, its not easy to clean out either. bacteria and parasites are my concern. not to mention fish and frog eggs, leaches and anything else that can hitch a ride... time to go buy a net!!!!!!!!!

I'm right behind ya! I don't even know what the birds want with my pond besides a drink. It's too deep for them to bathe in it. Still not ok. GL with the ducks! YIKES! They make a mess of EVERY thing! We raised two one year in my mother garden thinking they would eat the snails NOPE!! those things made a HUGE mess of their kiddie pool and killed more than a few small plants!
