Muskegon, MI:

Cement guys needed sand to put under our new patio, so I told them to dig for it as I've been threatening to have a pond for five years....
Hole has been there for a month since, as I scratched my head, wondering what the hell, I have done....my typical project modus.

Had basic idea for bog/watergarden as filtration.
So there it sat. Today, finally made some headway with divider and prepping for liner which will need to be 16x55 or so in size.

4500-5500 gallons at a guess.

Will have main pump at deep point in a tub filled with 2-3 inch river rock, and having lines attached to the tub for removal/cleaning. A few large rocks at bottom, but no gravel or sand there for ease of removing leaf-litter etc....

Bog/garden will have grid of 2" PVC piping with grooves cut for main pump water to flow up into 3/8 pea-gravel. A short but decent volume waterfall/rapid will drop back into the pond from the bog.

There will be a second smaller pump feeding the larger waterfall (trickles) at deeper end.

Ledge along far-side (right) of deep end for plants

Plumbing and electric will be on top of the liner, crossing the dividing wall among rocks so as not to be an eyesore. -hopefully.

Trying for very low maintenance.

Very part-time project, will take awhile.

Covered with billboard vinyl to protect from rain, and that will be underlayment. Divider wall will be covered in 6ft doormats or similar to protect the liner.

Wish me luck and guidance will be appreciated!

You would be wise to make a lower shelf all around your whole pond as you can put larger rocks on it so it will hide the liner. Then whatever type of driftwood, boulders, rock etc. will go above that and allow sprawling plants to crawl into your pond. I made another deeper shelf under that shallow shelf for pots of plants to sit on.

Welcome! Looking forward to your progress and discoveries along the way. We all learned from our mistakes, so please ask questions and do some reading. There are great examples to follow and "borrow" ideas from here such as hiding the liner tip from J.W.
Also -- sometimes these projects just take a bit more time than we expected so don't get frustrated. Ex: I built my bog a year before my pond got dug but it all worked out. Best of luck.
