Hello, we have just bought a new house that has a pond in the garden..I have never had a pond before! it clearly has a hole as the water is very shallow and drops after one night if you fill it. It does have goldfish in it though, so needs fixing quickly as it is so low. Probably been like that for months before we bought it.
It has a filter on the side but I don’t understand it or how to turn it on!?!? Does it need electricity?
Desperately need help purely as there are live fish in it.

Hello and welcome!

If you could take pictures of the pond and filter set up, that might help. Is the pond concrete or does it have a liner? Does it have a waterfall?

If it is leaking every day, most likely you have a tear in the liner. When it sinks as low as it goes go around the level the water stops at and see if you can feel or see a issue. Look outside the pond and see if you can see a big wet area. That much water should leave a wet spot.

Welcome. Be of stout heart, it's fix-able, and when it's fixed, it will be gorgeous. @addy1 is (of course) right for how to find the leak.
(Your decorative birds on the side of your pond did give me a moment of "oh NO, NOT fish eating birds, too!" but I settled down.)

Not a clue what your holding there it may be a heater sensor.

Is the piping metal or plastic?

let the water drop in the pond and when it stops that is where at least one of your leaks will be as mentioned above. start with the skimmers or water falls and edging along the pond

Thank you for the help everyone… I’ve checked around the liner today and there are very small pinholes all over it.
Would you reckon just replace the whole liner in this instance?

That hole is such a perfect circle I would have to say it was a chew hole from an insect. I would replace the liner. It should only be a weekend task. However. I would think about some insecticide under the liner around the sides UNDER the liner again and possible concrete cloth. Though that's not cheap stuff.

Or patch each one up!?
There are quite a few..
I think replace the liner. The regularity of the holes is curious. I see you have a ramp into the pond (?) to save wildlife, I'd guess. Is there an animal who might be walking in and puncturing the liner in places?

and welcome @FancyNancy
That hole kinda looks like a bee bee or maybe pellet or bullet gun hole, it's so perfectly round. I don't know what kind of insect could make a hole like that through a liner? How thick is the liner? I mean does it feel pretty tough or is it easily scrunched w/your fingers?
