Well it’s that time of year again...... Sarah and I..... with the help of our Grandson, cut the jungle down. We are leaving the plants in the pond for now..... let them keep doing their thing until the first hard freeze..... This is fifth winter and the Hogs (That’s what I call them now) are huge. After our first year disaster, we have lost one fish, never knew why, but since none of the other’s were affected we went on..... We have not added any and the rest are doing great..... what I get from this is we have the right amount/ size fish for the filtration and the amount of plants growing in the pond, so I think we have a balanced system. I don’t water test anymore..... don’t do water changes.... add water when it needs it, but what I do is watch the fish they will let you know when things are not right...... less is better

Looks great. How deep is your pond, and how many koi are in there? I had 12 in my 1600 gallon/4 foot deep circular pond. A couple were approaching 24" long, big boys, and were starting to cause trouble with the plants , so 4 of the biggest were donated to another nearby ponder. Much better now with 8. We just got an early 6" of snow and 25 degree temp here in MA. Time to clean out all the plants, and prepare the pond for winter.

I have 10 and really think that is two too many..... but it’s gone great for the last three winters. My pond is 4’ deep at the main drain and 3000 gallons with a bead filter plus filter/ bacteria media in the waterfall and skimmer. What makes this work for me is enough bio material to take care of the ammonia and a huge amount of plants growing in the pond..... less fish and more plants make the difference for me
