Everything I've read says that the minimum gallonage for Koi is 1000gal. Is that true? My pond measures 4'x8'x20"=400 gallons, I'm in Georgia so it never gets all that cold, should I stay with goldfish?
In that size pond, I would stay with goldfish. We have almost 1200 gallons and I already want to find new homes for the three koi in there. They get big fast.
They grow very fast. I purchased all 14 of my koi this spring. Stopped by the pet store to see if they have anything new and interesting. I couldn't believe that my koi were once that small.
If you had a good filter, a koi or 2 may be okay. Don't know that I'd do it, but I've seen plenty of koi in aquariums.
It is suggested that there be a mininumum of 1,000 gallons though.
I have heard 1 koi per 100 gallons is ideal. I had 8 adult koi in my 750 gallon pond for the past year. I just added another 650 gallon lower pond that is connected.
Mine have been fine, the water is clear and tests perfect.
A good bio filter and lots of circulation is key to success.
