Hey everyone 👋 — I’ve been building my koi first-aid kit over the years, one “lesson learned the hard way” at a time.
Some things have been total lifesavers (like Dimilin + Defender finally fixing what Prazi couldn’t). I try to start with the most gentle approach possible—but I also want to be ready when something serious hits.

Now I’m restocking a few things (Koizyme, Defender) and thinking about switching to Aqua MedZyme, so I’d love your feedback. What’s in your koi medicine cabinet that you won’t go without? 🐟

I always go as natural and gentle as possible but I have had some instances where that wasn't working and I'd like to be prepared. No judgements or rude comments please.

I have a lot of redundancy. And yes I am aware.

🧴 Water & Neutralizers

Prime • Stress Coat • Ammo Lock

S.A.F.E. powder • Sodium Thiosulfate

Potassium Permanganate (for dips/paste)

Hydrogen Peroxide (for ulcers + cleaning)

5x Boogie Blue filters (4 hoses + auto-fill)

------------

🦠 Bio & Probiotics

Koizyme (running low — refill or switch to MedZyme?)

Defender (AquaMeds) — huge success paired with Dimilin

Pond Perfect (TLC) • Nite-Out II (leftover)

Considering FritzZyme & Microbe-Lift PL

-----------------

💊 Meds & Topicals

Melafix • Dimilin-X • ProForm-C (stains but works!)

Iodine • NT Labs Ulcer Swab • Propolis (short-lived seal)

Morton’s Salt (40 lb bags) • Clove Oil

Montmorillonite Clay — Cindy’s miracle fix for pea soup water 🌿✨

------------------

💉 Injectables & Tools

Baytril (Enrofloxacin) — saved one of my big girls 💉 (thank you @fly4koi and Rich)

Sterile syringes & needles

Medical kit (gloves, gauze, scissors, scalpel, etc)

Still deciding if suturing is worth learning 🤔

----------------------

🔬 Next Adds

Aqua MedZyme • Dexamethasone • Tricide-Neo

Silver Sulfadiazine • MS-222 (sedation)

Microscope (i have a great new one but practice needed 😅)

Still trying to ID which Microbe-Lift spray that pond guy used for ulcers and tail rot—it was magic!

----------------------

❓ Looking for Feedback

What are your must-haves for emergencies?

Sutures — overkill or essential?

Anyone tried Dex for shock?

Longest-lasting sealant you’ve found?

Tips for microscope slides or parasite ID?

What of these should I get rid of so I don't have so much stuff and have my clear go toys for emergencies.

Let’s compare notes — what’s actually saved your fish, and what wasn’t worth keeping stocked? 🙏🐟

20+ years of raising koi to sell. I've had several of these but most have gone out of date. Unless you are introducing new fish or not monitoring your water, I don't see the need to have a complete pharmacy. My number one must have was replacement pumps. Always had at least 3 extra pumps and an extra air pump.

Wow. I literally have none of these. If I had to stock this "arsenal" I'd throw in the towel.

😂🤣😂🤣 I tell ya I felt the same way!! Ugh. I had it rough in the beginning of my Koi journey. Ultimately, I didn't because I didn't want to abandon my fish. We originally had a small, 600-gallon, old, unmaintained pond that we had to figure out. We took advice from many people, although I wouldn't use Algaecide again- it's useless and harmful, I've learned. We needed conditioners for various water changes. Then we inherited a set of 12 BIG Koi and decided to build a new pond, as there was absolutely no way they would even fit a fin in that baby one. We had to have our fish in a temporary pool for a year and a half building our pond. And when we inherited them and put them in the temporary pool, we were starting in WINTER. Ugh, that was so incredibly brutal. We had to move up in size twice as they got bigger. The final baby pool was 4500 gallons, and I got it because my females were getting beaten up by this one male spawning activity. I've thought about rehoming him for that reason. That's when I had to learn about the injectables, which completely saved her life. Overall, I don't use much of this. After I moved them into their current home a few months ago (after we completed the build) they all were getting sicky and I tried natural things first like salt and melafix but ultimately had to do prazi, which failed, then I did Dimilin and defender which took care of it. My pond is new and still growing and settling in, so I suspect I'll have some bumps along the road. The proform C twice a year is usually my go-to, but I don't want to dye anything green. So I did Dimilin and Defender, and it worked. Now that they are in their big pond, I need to get all my plants situated and the bog settled in. With winter approaching, I'm assuming any plants I put in there now will die, so I only have a couple and plan to go buck wild in spring.

When I started with koi, having salt in the water was recommended. It was a pain to monitor and keep levels right. We had several major problems. Electrical short on a pump that killed off a lot of the koi. Then the spring start up where we didn't drainage 500 gallon holding area that was full of rotted leaves. We lost 80% of the koi and the ones that survived had fin and tail rot. Melafix and pimafix were still in my basement till last year.
We rehomed all the koi this year. Hubby and I are both getting older and have had major surgeries. I miss them but am glad they are where they will be well cared for.
My suggestion is don't add any fish unless you can quarantine. That will save you a fortune on keeping meds on hand.

@tanyaclick I feel like your journey illustrates my point - you definitely get it. IF you have the right number of fish in an appropriately sized pond and you maintain the pond, the fish take care of themselves. The problem comes with an overstocked pond, adding new fish, fish outgrowing the space, inadequate filtration, etc etc etc. In a crisis - and we've likely all had them - knowing the appropriate treatment can be helpful, but in many cases it's a matter of re-homing fish or building a bigger pond, and very few people are ready to hear that. And again - not picking on you, but taking in 12 big fish with no place to put them created the problems you were then forced to deal with. Your experience would be far different had you not been in that situation.

Having said that, we had a parasitic infection (we believe from some ducks that took to swimming in the pond that spring) that was taking out our fish two and three at a time one summer. Knowing about - and being able to get Prazi in a hurry - was a lifesaver. So it's good to be aware of what's out there, but I don't see the point in keeping all those other things in stock at home.

The only thing that Proform C will dye green is your hands and clothes if you get it on them. The color won't affect anything in your pond.

I have had my koi pond for 15 years and over the years have raised 7 large beautiful koi. This is what I add to my pond every 2 weeks throughout the year and it has worked for me with out any health issues at all.
1. Montmorillonite clay 2. Aqua- Med Zyme 3. Aqua Meds Artic Blend (winter months only) I am in 7a
