I have a 10000 litre pond that's clear and I have a decent filter and pump and some small airstones. My problem is I have probably over 100 goldfish of various colours and sizes. I have added ove the last 2 years 3 koi and 2 japanese koi from young. I think they aren't growing that quick. Don't know what to do. I can only think of the hard task of working out what ones to give away to a good home. What do people think?

Not growing isn’t an issue because in all likelihood they are growing just slowly. Dependping on what you feed them, their genetics, etc. can play a role in their growth. I have koi that are 10 years old or more and are only 18” or so long and others that are 3 years old and 18-20” long.

The bigger concern is the amount of fish in your pond, I would just stick with goldfish in there if it was me, to keep from overwhelming the filter system, as you already have a lot of them.

Welcome to the forum!

Tend to agree you have a lot of fish in your pond.

Thanks for your reply JHN. Yes I give them good quality koi food which has improved their colour. I've had goldfish for the last 6 years. The filtration has never been over whelmed as its a big kockney koi filter. I do like the idea of only a few big koi wondering around but I like the goldfish too.

When we moved in 8 years ago the liner was worn out so I replaced it. The fish you see there were mostly small black ones. (I had to save them all lol)

Lots of pretty fish and hard to say goodbye but if you don't it could be heartbreaking for you if they die.

Very pretty pond!

Are you sure about your pond size? It’s hard to judge from pictures but it doesn’t look to be a 2500 gallon pond.

In any case deciding who goes is easy - either all the goldfish or all the koi. Clearly the easier task is the koi. But if you don’t decide nature will choose for you. And that’s sad.

Only 4 koi in there but 100+ goldfish, comets black/gold and some interesting mixes like a orange with black scales family. The pond is 3 foot in the deepest bit. Quite big. Pics don't always show to scale. Yep when that day comes it will be many goldies. Thankyou for your comments Lisa. Any one in England lol

If you want the koi to grow to their proper size and survive 40-60 years you want to just have 7 koi in that pond and nothing else. If you want goldfish with 4 koi then it's 28-30 more single tail goldfish. I calculate 20 gallons for each goldfish.
