The neighbors caught a large 7-10 pound catfish and I wanted to put him in my pond to help clean up the bottom but my Mom advised me against it. I have some small goldfish and koi (smaller than the catfishes mouth opening) would he have eaten the small fish & could he have had any sickness coming from a pond?

A channel that size would be the only thing left in your pond. They love goldfish.

Plus they don't exactly clean the bottom. They do eat things we don't like in the pond but it all comes out of them as ammonia and poo. Some is converted into more catfish. So how much good they do vs adding to the waste load is not a super trade off, like any fish. Koi and Goldfish are also considered bottom feeders, both eat algae, but the net result is more waste with them than they remove.
