Leak issue, what to do

Hi all,
I haven’t posted in a VERY long time as everything has been stable with my pond until the past week or so. Long story short, there is at least one leak happening somewhere. I had topped off the pond around 4pm yesterday after thinking some of it had evaporated during the cold weather last week, and the water had dropped 3-4” by 10am today. A very tiny known leak near the pump area may have gotten worse, but there also may be a liner leak or a waterfall issue as the higher ground is very wet too.

While I’m diagnosing all of this… I have the pump and waterfall shut off temporarily. I have an aerator running in the water by the fish. Is aeration enough for the fish for at least a day or two? I have never left the waterfall off for more than a few hours. It’s warm outside right now (Chicago area, 53 degrees), but we are supposed to have a cold blast mid-week—will the aerator and a de-icer suffice? I know I may have to pull the pump and blow out the plumbing so there’s no standing water in the pipes that might freeze.

(Approx 750 gallon pond. Aerator is the white thing in the water—I have it placed about halfway between the surface and the bottom.)

My pump stays off all winter, and all I use is an aerator and de-icer. And our winters are essentially identical since I live just north of you. I'm surprised you normally keep your pump going. My waterfall freezes and I always get concerned it will either get blocked or routed out of the pond.

I don't know what difference it makes when it comes to your koi vs my goldfish, but I assume they'll be ok.

Following up. I had the pond repair guy come out and take a look. The known leak is not a major issue—the pond still holds like 97% of the water once the leak stops. Pond guy checked waterfalls, all pipes and plumbing, edges of liners/landscaping, bio filters, really everything that could possibly be leaking and couldn’t find the source. We ran the pump and waterfall for about 10 minutes and there was a quarter-inch drop in the water level in the pond but no dribbles or puddles or leaks visible. 🤷‍♀️ He was honestly stumped. We’ve settled on the idea that there is a leak somewhere in the middle/bottom of the liner near the waterfall based on the wet spots on the ground. We are going to replace that section of liner next week as long as we get some above-freezing air temperatures.

No no no - those fish are far too large for no running water. And honestly @teeemkay - too large for your 750 gallon pond. Now I'm worried about you and your fish... if you get a full ice cover they will suffocate. (ask me how I know!) And YES - the fact they are koi vs goldfish is 1000% different. Those koi put off so much more waste per ounce than goldfish do.

I'm just to the north of you and we keep our pond running all year round - keeping the water moving does far more for the fish and off-gassing than any small hole with an aerator in my experience - I was going to say "opinion" but I have many years of experience and one really bad winter outcome to back this up. The waterfall ices over, but the water is still moving underneath the ice which keeps the gases from building up.

And please - let's talk about getting those big fish into an appropriately sized pond next spring. You have a gold fish pond; not a koi pond. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I know you care about your fish. They are WAY too big for that volume of water.

Hi! We plan to turn the pump back on for the rest of the winter as soon as the waterfall liner is replaced Monday or Tuesday. I agree, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, but this is the first time in 10+ years that it’s actually broke (the liner) and we do have to fix it. 🙁 I absolutely don’t want to leave the pond like this long-term—this is a temporary emergency measure. Hubs and his family are racing back from traveling so he can be home tomorrow to help with any ice cover during this cold snap that’s setting in. Horrible timing for this temperature drop, so I’m just hoping for the best. I have an aerator running, I have a de-icer in right by the skimmer box like I usually do, so I’m doing what I can for an hole for air exchange. I have backups of both on hand in case either fail. I’m going to check it often tonight.

I’ve been trying to find takers for most of the koi as I know the massive ones are, well, massive. Two of my friends who used to gladly take any juveniles don’t have their ponds anymore.

Oh gosh... I'm hoping for only good things for you @teeemkay ! Woke up to 3 degrees today... after 50 degrees last week, this is not fun! Warmer by the weekend - just gotta get through the next day or two!

Let's hope you can find some Chicago area peeps who would take those big beauties off your hands! You need someone with a large pond. Try talking to Aquascape - they maybe could hook you up with some customers who are looking for some big, mature fish. They've buuilt ponds all over the greater Chicagoland area - surely someone has room for a fish or two!
