Lets give it a go

We moved into our new house in spring 2012 and at the time the back yard was a clean slate. The only down fall of the new house is that we had no door to the back yard or deck... With a dog and 2 boys this was the first thing I had to address. A new door, walk way, 60' French drain, privacy fence, concrete pad for the hot tub and rebuilt deck I threw in a cheap preform pond, which ended up being un balanced, over filled from heavy rain and got crooked.

The kids though it would be fun to jump around in the pond..

Not wanting to do any major projects after my very busy first summer in the house I decided to build a pond....

well maybe this year you can turn it into a lovely little pond with frogs and fish and then get a little wading pool for the kids?
It looks like it could have lots of potential, maybe plant a couple plants around it to shelter the pond and slowly go from there!

Anthony,

Welcome to the GPF! From your avatar, it appears that you are a fisherman. I am from Nebraska and love to fish. Of course we only have freshwater fish here. Only time I attempted saltwater fishing they booted me right out of the Henry Doorley Zoo in Omaha. They seemed really angry for some reason. Not sure why. I had a valid Nebraska fishing license. :) Hee hee

I hope we will find a time to talk fishing... and tell lies to eachother. :)

Glad you came aship!

Hey Catfish, yes love fishing. The picture is freshwater, king salmon. I live in Rochester, NY and do most of my fishing in Lake Ontario or tributaries that run to it. I never lie about my fish....

Nice pond! Wondering if you have any problem with the runoff water from the rain, through your mulch and make the water dark? I love the color of your mulch :)

Hey Anthony! Your pond is beautiful! Looks like you have DIY'd your skimmer with a circular weir... have you tried it? How does it work? I'll be putting mine together within the next few weeks and am insanely curious as to how yours is performing. Any pics of it installed?

Nepen - yes the black mulch did run off and turn my water dark. I suggest if you can put it out away from the pond so that most of the loose black particles can run off away from the pond. Then once it rinsed some spread it were you want. I cant remember if I had fish in when I put the much down, I am thinking I didn't.

Michey - I bought the weir from a pool store, it has worked pretty good allowing leaves and what not to spill over into the basket. I used a 6mm thick plastic and cut a hole out in the middle and it sits on that. I was originally afraid the fish would swim in the skimmer that's why I made it this way but the don't go anywhere near it.

tbendl - Thanks, Kind of struggling with the string algae still, I am guessing the bog hasn't kicked in just let and the plants are still trying to establish. Hopefully I can knock it back some as its sticking to everything.

Thanks, Anthony! My weir and basket arrived yesterday (ordered from Amazon). I'm going to fashion my skimmer into an in-pond one for now using a 20 gallon garbage can (my pump cage is ginourmous and it's the smallest can I could find that would still fit), but its GREAT to know that its working for you! Thank you for the update!
