Liner repair in mud

I have a hole in my liner. I have found it and all I need to do is repair it, but trying to get it clean and dry so a patch will stick seems impossible. The ground underneath it is muddy, so even though I've emptied some water out of the pond I just can't get it dry to enable the patch to stick.

Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure there are patches that work under water, as we did one on our pool liner...but I'm sure someone with some experience patching a pond liner, will be along.
