Making a large pond smaller?

I have a large lined pond - probably 40 ft. by 20 ft and 6 ft deep in the deepest part. We are in a drought area and feel bad about the water (although we need some use to keep rights active). Also find it really expensive to maintain and keep healthy. I have heard that it is difficult to make a pond smaller - would like to reduce to maybe 10 ft. by 10 ft. Does anyone know if it can be done? Thanks

It can definitely be done. Where is the dirt that was removed to make the original pond?

Right - your biggest challenge will be finding dirt to fill the hole left behind. Reducing the size won't be that hard at all (she says from her comfortable recliner in her living room! ha!)

Tell us a bit more about your pond - do you have fish? How many? Filtration? Waterfall? Aeration? Which part of the pond do you find expensive?

welcome and if you don't have dirt sometimes an ad for dirt will help in your local paper ..Pond building places sometimes have extra dirt they are glad to get rid of .New housing develpements are a good source also .Word of mouth really helps also .How old is the liner .

We have the dirt on the back of our property (at least some of it - may need to haul in more). Pond has filter and aerator. We don't have fish - lots of frogs...

Then you have the most important part! You'll have to drain it down and backfill behind the liner. Is the liner in good shape?
