media in home made bio filter

im in the process of building a bio filter and i think i am going to use sponges in a netting on the bottom of the filter.

is there a certain kind thats best?

does it matter if they are colored / dyed colors ?

no sponges... scrubbie pads!!! sponges get water logged weighed down and clog up. get the plain soapless ones

those will do,a combination of the different colors is what skippy sells.
