What is the pH level? Anything 10 or under is fine.

Anytime you try to lower pH you are getting into problem territory. It might go down for a day or so, but it will jump back up to the previous level.

Those pH swings are very stressful and harmful to the fish and can even cause death.

Forget the muriatic acid and leave the pH alone. It's much more important to have a stable pH than it is to have a certain number.

@Goldie Hello and welcome!

What is the current pH of this pond? And just curious why you’d choose muriatic acid over, say, baking soda? With smaller ponds, you have to go slowly, so your proportions have to be carefully taken into consideration.

And 100% agree with what @WaterGardener said…..the pH number isn’t as important as the stability of the pH.

PS: You can look this information up online for more precise calculations. Which takes me back to….WHY muriatic acid and are you a troll? Just curious. Always curious.

Muriatic acid can be used to lower pH. Not that I would recommend that.

Why the OP feels it is necessary to do so is another subject.

Is a pH reading of 10 okay for fish?

Yes. The fish will adjust to that. But it's pushing the limit.

Are there fish in this pond? What kind?

Please use a liquid type test for your pond if you aren't already using one. The strips are not accurate. Also, please get a test for KH if you don't have one. Please post those results here with the pH results for pond and tap water.

Is 10 also the pH of your tap water? If not, you should find out what could be in the water to make it go that high. Removing that would lower the pH.

Could you provide more information please? Is the pond new? Is it made of concrete or does it have mortared rocks in the water? Concrete and mortar can raise pH. That is usually temporary and will drop over a few weeks.

With more information we might be able to help you better. Thanks.

If there is adequate calcium in the water, baking soda can be used to lower pH. Without enough calcium, the pH will continue to climb.
