My pond is approximately 23ft long by 18ft wide by 3.5ft deep. Would 4 full grown Koi and 5 full grown Commets be too much?

No but remember they will have babies and that will be every year .When koi spawn also they make a real mess of the water and can even jump out in the chase for mating .Long sleek body is a male and chubby middle is a female .:).I lost 1 shubbie after he jumped out and figure after 10 years I have given away over 200 babies

If you get that many males and only one female won't the males chase that one female to death during spawning?

I have no clue but I will ask the breeder tomorrow and see what she suggests. What you are saying sounds very logical though

Yes do that cuz there have been instances on this forum where there have been too many males and not enough females at least w/ goldfish and it can be very miserable if not fatal for the female fish. I only have goldfish but someone w/ koi here could answer this better.

How about all male?

I think you should start another thread and ask the question so perhaps more koi people will respond. I know the male koi are smaller and you could sure keep an all male pond. Females could become egg bound w/o a male I believe but like I said ask the question in another thread for experienced koi answers.
