Hi All, just bought our first house and inherited my first pond. Having stumbled across this forum i thought I would post my journey so far and hopefully become an active member of your lovely community!

Im in Yorkshire in the UK and got a pon that is 2.3m x 1.4m by 1m deep. It has 2 depths at 2ft and 3ft split down the middle. When i moved in there was pictures of the pond from years ago but when we moved in the pond had been filled in with bricks and dirt!

So I set to it and managed to get all the bricks out (About a pallets worth) it took me 3 weekends as life tends to get in the way!

Next step was putting a pond liner in... i chose a cheap one and paid the price as a brick fell in and split the liner! Next thing i put my hand in my pocket and bought a decent epdm liner which did the job nicely I filled the pond and left it for a few weeks to settle.... then it turned bloomin green!

I added a fat airstone (8") a little fountain pump and then made my own pressurised filter with wadding.... its a bit experimental but i like learning my own way. It has helped clear the water slightly but is a bit average so far I think.

Theres a great place nearby with lillies and plants so I took his advice and picked up a good mix of plants which Im happy with and i think add a nice look to the setup. I have spotted a lady nearby giving away 2 ghost koi and 2 shubunkins which I will pick up tomorrow and see how they settle in. There is a few things I dont know about and I need to get a testing kit but im well on my way so I wanted to share my journey. Typed this on my phone so apologies for typos. I hope you like my pics and any questions or tips are welcome!

Lovely little pond! But please - no koi! You have a perfect pond for a few goldfish.

Hi Lisa, Thanks for the advice, I know this is a little small but I will be adding a big Hydroponic garden over summer and will be increasing the total system water by about 1000 gallons.

Given the larger water volume and significant filtration provided by this system do you see an issue having 2 ghost Koi in a smaller than ideal space? I need the nutrients from the fish to feed the plant growth and they will keep the biological toxocity low in return, natural symbiosis at its finest! Let me know your thoughts or if anyone else has experience in this area I would be keen to chat!

While the gallons may be ok, its the size of the pond that is an issue. Koi can grow to 3 feet in length and need room to swim. I would stick with goldfish.

Welcome to our group!

I would agree with above, stick with shubunkins, they are beautiful and a lot easier to care for. Your pond is too small for a koi, they get huge. I have only shubunkins and really enjoy all the colors
