Koi can come in all colors, and all sorts of personalities. You can't just take a darling Showa home and call it "Bob." It needs an elegant name, like "Moonfire" or "Wind Dancer" In this article is all the names you'll need for a pet koi.

However I'd have thought koi more deserving of a japanese name than new age

Hahaha! I guess I go against convention here (much like @sissy ). I have Steve the Showa (who turns out to be a female), Frank the Chagoi, Potato the Sanke, Leonard--used to be a Lemon Hariwake, but lost all his yellow, Clive the Shubunkin, Zoom the Aka Matsuba, Bigger Blacker Fish, the Malaysian black koi, Mimosa the butterfly Kawarigoi, Whitey the Kikokuryu, Tang the Orenji Ogon butterfly, Haydn the Goshiki (get it? Haydn Goshiki? He hides a lot), and Buddha the Budo Goromo.

Whew... that was a challenge to remember all 12 without looking at them!
