Just received 4 of above from on line vendor. they advise to remove small plastic pot on rootball and plant directly in my bog filter. Others say the rots will "quickly" clog my distribution pipes and must be potted to prevent invasive rizomes. Still others recommend no pot but pull out once a year to trim roots.

So what is best?

BTW my bog is 14 in deep all pea gravel.

Thanks

I had horsetail in my bog filter many years ago. It only spread a little, never clogged anything, but after a few years completely died off over winter. You could always try it out and keep a close eye on it. How it grows down by you may be a bit different than how it grows here

I love the look of the plant but would not put it in my bog. It grew wild in Arizona along the rivers and I imagine it might be equally happy in your climate. If I plant any it will be contained.

I have horsetail rush planted in a small pool in my waterfall. It definitley tries to "jump ship" every single year. I am able to remove the entire root ball (because it's growing in gravel on top of liner) and divide it back down to size, but having seen it's propensity to spread I would never feel comfortable turning it loose in my bog.

I have seen horsetail at a semi abandoned nursery that I believe fitz koi has recently bought. It is everywhere it appears to have out competed creeping jenny.
I also had it in my pitcher plant bog at the start and realized it had to go as it's runner would travel 8 feet before they poked the heads up to start an off shoot . Much like marsh marigolds. If it is not completely contained it would be heading for the trash.

OK that's a great example of "know your growing zone". My marsh marigold has not spread one single inch since the day I planted it - I'd love for it to migrate to other parts of the pond, but it never has. And it's native here. But horsetail would take over my back yard in short order, no questions asked.
