I have a waterfall between two ponds. On two occasions, the floating plants in upper pond have blocked the waterfall. Of course, lower pond emptied while upper pond overflowed. Would appreciate any suggestions/pictures on guarding to prevent in the future.

I've seen people use fishing line strung across the waterfall to keep the floaters held back far enough to keep a full block from happening. For a more natural look (depending on the width of the opening) you might be able to lay a stick/branch across to accomplish the same thing.

Or, you could corral the floaters in some sort of ring & anchor it back away from the top of the waterfall.

Best solution is to change from floating plants in the upper pond to a plant that is rooted

I would go with corralling the floating plants where they can't block the water flow. Or what @GBBUDD said - keep the floaters the bottom pond!

Thanks for all the replies. Going to try the corral suggestion first.

Decided to try a hoop at the falls. Had some black 1/2 inch PVC that I cut into a 1/2 hoop. Threaded it through some pond netting and added a little pipe insulation for flotation. Attached some weights to bottom of netting and will see how it works. The Mrs. said whatever I do, she did not want to be able to see it from our deck. Cosmetically it works, will see how functional.
