He's pretty small, actually the koi go after him. I know to keep an eye on the koi. Be more concerned when it gets bigger, but would probably just replace it with a small one every year or so.

The painter also will love your water lettuce, anacharis, hornwort. They did a great job of eating my plants. A painter is 70% vegetarian. I have my three painters now in an aqaurium in my office. Their shells are about 6" long. They ate my 8" goldfish. So they have been out of the pond for the last year. They go after the larger fish on moon lit nights or during the twilight of the evening. Any small fry will be eaten. They can become quite tame. I've had mine for 6 years.

I wish he'd eat more water lettuce. I started with 24 plants, and now probably have 400+.

Once he starts chasing fish, he'll go back to the lake.
