New Outside fish person with baby Kio

I have read some about my question but need advice still. Our girl Comet (10'' long) died a month ago of no apparent reseason leaving the male alone. A week ago we put two baby Kio (1 1/2 inches long) in with him and they are doing great. Birds are not a problem with our set up but this morning I saw a 2'' Leopard frog sitting pond side. Is it very probable that our two new pups (the Kio play so much!) are in danger from frogs and should I protect them with netting until they are much bigger. We need more poopers for our aquaponics system to work right. The plants are starving for nitrogen presently as you can see from the photos. Thanks for any suggestions.

@Christina54 Hello and welcome!

While I personally have never had a problem with my Southern Spotted Leopard frogs bothering my fish, I can’t say that is doesn’t happen. From what I’ve read, some netting’s are actually more harmful for the frogs vs any benefits for the fish.

You need more poopers in your aquaponics system...... Those koi are going to grow quickly enough, and they’re going to reproduce quickly.

• How big is your pond — gallons and dimensions?
• Do you test your water?
• How is your aquaponics system set up?
• Fish rarely die “for no apparent reason,” (though it does happen). Were there any signs of distress or injury?
• Did you quarantine the new koi before you added them to the existing pond?
• When you say that your 2 new “pups.....play so much” — can you describe this “playful behavior?” I wonder if you might be describing “flashing,” or signs of illness/ parasitic issues.

Anyway, the more information you can provide will help us help you figure out what’s going on.

we need lots more info on the pond to help with questions like stated already by turtle mommy.koi get huge and produce more waste and need more oxygen .

Welcome @Christina54 - some good questions for you to answer! Here's one more - where are these "starving plants" that you are worried about? I'm maybe missing them in the photo, but everything looks green green green to me!
