We bought our house last year and had been dealing with swampy conditions in our front yard. It was a soupy mess and we assumed it was from excessive rainfall. Decided to dig a French drain to help direct the water to the drainage ditch between ours and our neighbor's houses. Once we started digging though we discovered that we had a natural spring in the front yard. So we ended up solving that "problem" by digging a pond and running the overflow via a French drain to the swale/drainage ditch.

We're not sure what we're going to do with the pond yet. Maybe just plant around it and do some rock work. I imagine frogs and turtles will colonize it over time. I just don't want it to become a stagnant mosquito breeding ground. I suppose I could toss a few goldfish in there or some bluegills from a nearby lake or pond... But I'd prefer to have some water movement in there whether I have a few fish, frogs, etc., or not.

So here's my question... Are there any battery powered water pumps - or maybe solar powered with battery backup that would give me good water movement in this pond and keep the surface agitated? No need for a fountain or waterfall (though eventually I might like that). But just for now to keep the pond from becoming the bane of our neighborhood, could anyone recommend a pump for me? The pond is about 15-20 ft in diameter and 3-4 ft deep at the center.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to the forum!

I have seen some post about solar, but never really hear how well they do. I would do some net searches and see if any are rated well.

Hi - thank you. Yes, the reviews I'm reading on the solar pumps are not that impressive, unfortunately. I think I'm just going to have to run electric to the pond and get a really good pump in there.

I'm just a newbie but I think that is the right answer. Hobbies are supposed to cost way more than you first suspected. Yes, run electricity and get a good pump. And then spend a ton more on cool lights and fountains and waterfalls. In my experience that's how hobbies work.

BTW: I also have a natural spring but mine is in the basement. I sump pump 800 gallons per day out to my pond.

I look at it this way . We had a nice yard the wife and I would go out on the patio cook on the grill. Then we would ask our selves where we wanted to go for some entertainment. Add that up over the course of a year.

Now with the pond right off the patio before we know it the day the nights fly by . We don't need to go anywhere we just water the wild life and the waterfalls streams and bubbles as they drift across the pond . Yes pond cost a few bucks but we haven't talked vacation in five years so how much did the hobby cost after all. And most of all after a bad day sit out at the pond have a cold drink and the days issues float away
