I started with a 20’x13’ backyard pond with five small koi fish in 2000 then we sold and moved to our new home that is actually on a real pond, so I decided to build a pond in our front yard.
Started building this pond as soon as we settled in to our new home leaving our KoI fish with neighbors until our new pond was completed, fast forward to 2026 I would like to drastically change the look since in the 25 years fish have multiplied and I have purchased equipment that will make my limitations endless.
So I’m looking forward to educating myself on new products available and pointers on different techniques everyone has discovered over the years.
My plan is to shutdown existing waterfall, remove all rock, plants, boulders and expose pond Liner and start with a new liner changing waterfall drop elevation from 3’ to having multiple drops 1’ or less flowing down the stream.
if anyone has any advice on the best way to raise elevation where waterfall originally dropped? My plan is to add multiple drops leaving existing pond as is?
Thank you,
ETB

Welcome to the forum. Any pictures available?

I have soil with a bit of clay so I can normally use that to fill in and compact areas I want to build up. Worked good for a berm on the down slope of my pond.

Thank you. I was planning on using beach sand compacted and fully wrapped in filter fabric.

Welcome ti the site.
As mentioned pictures on the area , your location and things like trees over hanging the pond. How much sun you antisipate. How many fish , type. And maybe a little bit more about your old pond and your keeping will help us help you.
I put together a blog of building my pond but probably 25% you probably already know. But it has lessons learned and what id do diffrently if i was able to do it again. On my first build i did get aquascapes attention and won diy pond of tge year in 2023. But like your self my pond keeps evolving as well. Looking forward to see where you end up.
