Hello all, new to pond keeping. Have collected tropical fish for over 50 years. Have had a small summer pond with a stone fountain for several years to get a feel for it and to see how the local critters deal with it.
I just sank a livestock tank in the ground and would like to know what is the best continuous filtration system to use in it. I will start asking for help elsewhere in this site and look forward to many great discussions. Thanks.

Welcome Lilguy from Plymouth UK
What do you aim to keep in ponds, goldfish or perhapps koi ?
Maybe non of the above
Maybe purely natural this is the question we all have to ask ourselves , which way do we want to go ?
Have you given this a thought yet ?

lol. Pea soup is par for the course without filtration or lots of plant material. So... Have u decided to put anything in there yet? This will help point you in the right direction. Also, how many gallons is the stock tank, and how deep?

I am using livestock troughs. Upper sitting above grond 25/30 gal I have worked with for several seasons to see how local critters deal with it. It has a fuctioning statue in it, Half covered with floating plants. External 3 stage filtration for now. Its fuctionaing perfectly and will be used for the water fall when lower 125 gal buried trough stabilizes. Lower tank Oval approx 34 inches deep. About 15 small comets to start system and surface about 1/3 covered with plants. Heavy airation, and for now, small external 3 stage filter.
Once large tank clears, pea soup now, I will connect troughs through a water fall. Tanks get sunlight direct about 4 hours mid day.
Thanks all for any input.
