Hey all. Ive never had a pond before but I do have experience taking care of my son's turtle tank lol. I've recently dug a pond in my flower bed approximately 4'x5' and 3' deep and is ground level. I currently just have an Intex 530 gal/hr swimming pool filter sitting at the bottom, circulating water to the waterfall. I'd like to eventually get a few fish but the pump and return hose take up quite a bit of their would be swimming space. What I was thinking about doing was digging a hole next to the pond and sitting a Rubbermaid tote down into it. Then putting pebbles, filter media and the Intex pump inside the tote with an overflow setup from the pond to the tote. Does this seem at all feesible? Will the tote have to be too far underground to be below the pond's water level to even allow this to be done?

Your buried tote will be acting like a surface skimmer.
It sounds like it would be difficult to clean.
Will the tote overflow if your pump is shut off?
That would allow mud and debris to fall into the tote, wouldn't it?
