Hi all! Been awhile,

I bought 5 small petsmart koi, 1 died in 2 days all the rest are sick and now most of the pond fish 50% of are sick. 1 is eating. 1 is inside quarantined and showing sickness but still eating.

Without too many details right now my question is, any others with sick petsmart koi history?

Thks

All new fish should be quarantined. Never add them to your pond until you are confident they are healthy. A little late for that now though.

Could you please provide results of water tests?

NEVER EVER place new fish in your pond that comes from a big box store. while some may have a compitent fish dept not many do. and they push such large amounts and they NEVER keep the nets and buckets to one area so if one tank has an issue they soon all will.

Even the best dealers have issues. and the fish should not only be quarantiened but treated with the usulals like proform c and and prazi

The thing is most of them are PetSmart and and never quarantined them and never a problem. I asked the clerk should I quarantine and she said no don’t have to. If I go after them for damages and loss they might throw that quarantine rule around. Well the sick one I did will prove it.

Decided to take fish in to an Exotic species Vet tomorrow . I don’t think salt alone will do it and the meds available here are pretty useless.

i have never seen a fish at petco worth a trip to the exotic fish vet, nor can i see chasing for damages. fish breed by the thousands there is a reason the are bottom of the food chain and fefinately the odds of survival to full size evnen with a experianced keeper are not fool proof. going for damages well no offence but you sound like you have not ben to court before. good luck

A fish yes no biggie, but a pond full of 10 12 yr old 12” koi is worth it to me.

Court no, but I’ll give it a try with head office, customer relations etc.

If more people did the vet route they probably would have saved their fish and stopped spending endless $ based on forum opinions whom have never seen the fish.

An examine fee and consultation is $123 Cdn here. Maybe some tests or not and then proper treatment. Also I have 7000 gal pond so I need the best advice for treatment. Salt, drain it , capture and quarantine, etc etc.

I'm sorry to tell you this, but this is all your fault. It doesn't matter where you buy fish, you should never, ever mix them with the fish you already have. Take responsibility for your mistake and learn from it.

You can't rely on what pet store employees tell you. In my experience, they are some of the least informed people I have run into.

If I were in your situation, I would treat with a formalin/malachite-green product like Proform C. That will not kill your beneficial bacteria, but it cannot be used with salt in the pond. So don't add salt.

Since the new fish have already been added to the pond, you will have to treat the whole pond. It's too late now for quarantining.

It's a three day treatment. I would follow that up with Fluke-M. That should cover a variety of parasites and some diseases.

Good luck

Yes I agree somewhat but as stated up here those meds aren’t available and it’s 7000 gal.

True but for eg that other lady in that thread about fish food we were on probably has now 100 options opinions from you and others and has spent hundreds. She probably has still dead or sick fish. Time for a vet if they are important to her. But she hasn’t been on for a week to seek any further advice.
