Hi all, trying to figure out how big an air pump I will need to keep an air exchange hole open all winter here in central Ontario, I’ve been using a really large one a friend gave me but I think it’s overkill. It’s kind of industrial size from a large pond and used a lot of electricity and is noisy. I’m wondering how to know what size (specifications) I could get away with. The pond is not really big, I think it’s about 1250 gallons
(20’ x 6’ x 1.5’ deep) our temperatures can get pretty cold but pond doesn’t freeze to bottom. My goldfish survive just fine

Hi thanks for the reply, I can’t find anything about a Nitto or A20 or A40 (at least nothing that has to do with air pumps.) could you give me an idea of where to look for that?

I use an Aquascape Pro Air 20 for my pond that is 12' x 12' x 30" deep. I place it on an upper shelf directly below a floating deicer. Works great. Even kept a 10" hole in the ice when temps dropped to -27 F.

I used a Pond Master 20 L. I used to suspend the air stones about a foot into the water, allowing the deeper pond water to remain undisturbed for the koi.

Rebel idea here but because we keep our pond running all winter long I don’t worry about keeping a hole in the surface. We do run a pump with a diffuser, but frequently we will get many inches or even feet of snow and ice cover on the pond. The fish have always been fine I believe because the water continues moving which allows for the off gassing. When you shut a pond down and it becomes a closed system you do have to worry about keeping an opening in the surface.

This is what I use as my year-round aerator. It’s an Aquscape with 2 outlets. My pond is approximately the same size as yours. Of course, I live in the South, so my pond doesn’t freeze over (maybe a slight crust on the coldest days). (I have a cover over the pump to protect it from the elements.) If I did have harsh winters, I would elevate the diffuser so it sits just below the surface (pool noodles work well for this). My advice is to take the advice from our more Northern members. They have the experience with your winters.
