Well, it seems I may have seriously underestimated the cost of my pond-to-be, so it looks like I'll have to save up some money before I'm ready to break ground.

In the meantime, here are some resources that I've found to be useful while doing research for my own pond.

An article about concrete ponds and waterproof mortar for ponds.

After what I've read from various sources on the subject, I wouldn't use concrete in ponds north of USDA Zone 8, or (for obvious reasns) in areas prone to earthquakes.

An exellent forum about North American native fish of all types, including collecting, captive care and identification..

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the best general fish care site that I've ever found.

Their section on ponds, lakes and fountains.

And last but not least, if you live in the United States go to your local library and request the book
'Fishes of ____" (fill in the blank with the name of your home state.)
It's a VERY thorough guide to all fish in your state.
Mine (Fishes of Alabama) is over 700 pages!!
Every species has Illustrations, Maximum size, habitat, biloogy and a detailed range map

Water garden in a container? No pump needed.

Design in phases starting with a small pond? My smallest pond was 6' by 3', 12" deep.

Thousands of concrete pools (same as ponds) are built way north and in earthquake areas. I had a concrete pool during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake without problems. I didn't hear of anyone else having a problem. I never saw a non concrete pool in CA. I've seen pictures of concrete pools popping up a bit out of the ground when there was heavy damage, but I don't think a liner pool would fare any better in that case.
