Pond help!

Hi there - my parents have a small garden pond with I think 5 fish koi and shubunkin, they are away on holiday and the pump has stopped working - every time we try to switch it back on it short circuits all the other electrics in the house and the pump does not work. Any advice? They are away for another four days and I am worried about the fish! Thanks!

Maybe try unplugging the pump and plugging something else with a motor into the outlet where the pump is plugged. If that blows the circuit, it may be the circuit breaker or a problem with the electrical line from the circuit to the outlet, but if it doesn't, it is the pump...and time to get a new one if you don't know how to troubleshoot the pump problem or know someone who can.

Thanks for your response I'll give this a try. Any idea how long I have before the fish will suffer with the filter being off?

It's hard to say Heather, without knowing a lot more about the pond, but I would want to get this problem solved within the next 24 hours.

Good advice from @MitchM . A lot right now depends on the size of the pond - a small pond with that many fish will suffer faster than a larger one with the same number. Size of fish is also an important consideration - are you sure they are koi?

If there is any aeration in the pond (i.e. airstones under water) keep those running if you are able.
