I intend using a large pot/planter for a garden fish pond. Which type is best - terracotta, finer cement, fibreglass or resin? Thanks Jenny

Don't put too many fish in it and tiny fish like minnows that don't breed would do better unless this will be say a 500 gal pot. One goldfish needs about 50 gals of water for good results they say. If your weather is warm mostly you could keep a few tiny tropical fish in it.

Thanks for the tips, it will only be small, so maybe just plants rather than fish. Someone said they thought that fibreglass splits under water pressure. Is that so? Cheers

Jenny - are you in Australia? I suggest checking out Ozponds. He has many, many cool ideas for wonderful container ponds, as well as supplemental filtration - all DIY! He is also in Australia.

Hello and welcome!

As @WaterGardener asked, how big are we talking? Will this be sitting in a garden or on a patio? What is your weather like there……? Freezes or extreme heat? Will it be in shade or sun?
Hi, the pond will be mostly shaded. It gets hot here and will only be about 100 litres. Cheers

Welcome @JennyO !

In my opinion it's a shame these tiny containers ever get called "ponds" - and I HAVE one and call it a "patio pond". but having a full sized pond I've learned that these container water gardens behave nothing like an actual pond. Even the tiniest change in a small volume of water is magnified times 100. Not trying to dissuade as I love my own little planted water container, just a reminder that they are a special breed.

My container is resin. I do empty it in the colder months so it's never allowed to freeze with water in it.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I have looked at a resin pot and been calculating water volume to choose the most suitable size. When it's done, I'll post a pic. Thanks again!!!
