I’ve been watching lots of The Pond Advisor (Mark Wilson I think), on YouTube. He seems to advocate using a liner on both the inside and outside of the liner. He puts one on the outside of the liner for protection from the rocks I think. Is this standard practice, or is it overkill?

I think you mean underlayment. Lots of people do as @mrsclem said and use scraps under heavier boulders. But I think @GBBUDD completely lined his pond with underlayment then liner then underlayment. I can see one advantage in that it wouldn't be as slippery.

Ya, you’re right. I meant underpayment. That’s a good idea to just use scraps. Thanks!

Though non woven will allow sediment to stick inside the pond the insurance if your rocking a pond far out weights the fine sediment in my opinion.

I've noticed Team Aquascape doing this now, too. I plan to do it with the pond I am building.

I think I finally have all the rock I need, but vacation, dreaded work and other minor projects have retarded our progress. I was just telling my son, I hope to finish/level the pond on Thursday, work the stream and falls on Friday, and possibly place the liner on Saturday if all goes well. I’m still toying with the idea of a bog, and how to integrate it into my current design.

My bog is going on 5 years. I just opened /dug out a section of the matrix bog and I'm shocked how clean the gravel is. Don't get me wrong there's dirt on some of the rock but it's so little it's baffling. All I can think of is that the matrix settling chamber works that well that the sediment is falling out before if rises up through the rock . If after 5 years it's in this good a condition it could last my life time

I’ll have to do research on a matrix bog. I’m not familiar.

Heres a good start for you. SCROLL Toward the bottom of the bog builds both types are there

That’s an amazing pond! Thank you for sharing all your info. It’s a lot to take in. I’m trying to apply it to my specific situation.

Another question; the red markup in the picture is lower than the high side by at least 12-16”. I’m trying to build up that side with dirt, but of course it keeps washing out with the rain and gravity. And I’m afraid once I place the liner, the dirt could start slipping under the liner. Is there a better solution? Rock, block, or a wood fence?
