pond pump connection

Okay so I have a pump with a stepped outlet which goes up to 38mm and i want to attach it to 40mm solvent weld waste pipe.

1. Can i get a threaded connecter and remove the stepped tail altogether or
2. Connect with the tail at 38mm and step up for the 40mm s/w pipe.

My problem is what to search for? This is my first pond and I've gone straight in the deep end with 3 stepped 7000l ponds into a homemade gravity filter system then pumped 19m up the garden to start again.

Take your pump or at least some pictures up to a local irrigation store. Make it their problem.
