interested in type/size rock to use on horizontal platues and between large rocks on vertical walls. Have large granite rip rap as large rock. pond specialists placed small river pebbles (1/4"-3/4" dia). Concerned that pond vac will suck up these small pebbles. Any suggestions for smaller rock?

Weak vacs won't pick the pebbles up, but also won't clean very well. I mortar the pebbles in place. Easier to clean. The pebbles look great when first installed, but pretty quickly are hidden by algae and muck unless kept clean some way.

For powerful vacs the rock should be larger than the vac head hole.
