Searched around here first looking for a way to suck the silt/fish poop off the bottom of a sand bottom lined pond. The pond net I have kind of works but the fine particles just go through the net. Wish they sold a pond size siphon like the one I used to use for my fish tank. I’ve got bog filtration and a waterfall filtration but this buildup is from about 3 years of running. Thanks in advance!!!

How deep/large is your pond? There are long gravel cleaners available but they do clog easily with large debris, pieces of leaves and such.

No experience personally with pond vacs.

Thanks!! It’s about 30ft by 20ft. 6ft deep in the middle. I’m not sure if I should get a siphon and go down there with some goggles or try the pond vac route. I am able to net out a lot of the leaves so it’s mainly the fine silt that I’d like to get off the top layer of the sand.

That is a big pond. Mine is only about 700 gallons and a few feet deep but I use one of these when I want to empty or lower my pond substantially for maintenance. I tie a rope around the handles and I can swing it into the low spot to pump out the worst of the crud. Lot quicker than a siphon and handles smaller debris well.

Perhaps fashion a base or platform for it to keep it from sucking the sand up.

Are the suck up holes on the bottom and on the sides? Just wondering if they would suck up small fish. Like what size are the holes? Sounds like it can't suck up things bigger than 3/8th inch if I am reading it right.

Oh and does it grind things up or just suck them out whole? I guess if you want the water to go right back into the pond you will have to use some kind of a really fine batting or netting system to catch things?

I’m not worried about fish or sand in my pond I think the fish will get out of the way and if I lose some sand or water that can always be replaced. Basically I’m looking for a better way to remove the very fine darker particles that rest on top of the sand that I can’t seem to net out.

This might actually work perfectly!!! Should make the job quicker and the 25ft cord should be able to access everything I’ll just kick it around with fins and some googles
