I have been learning so much here, and elsewhere. Happy to report my pond water is clear, the parameters are good, and my floating plants are doing so well I have to keep thinning them to a separate water filled long pot to keep some open space. Yes, there is some light algea on the walls and rocks, I am not looking for an aquarium. I'm including a picture of one of my guys. For reference, the grid squares are 1.5" x 1.5". In negotiations now for a larger pond.

just watch debree does not clog up your pump . Light algae on rocks and liner the dish will eat if you don't feed them . great job . I have my friends huge fish tank in the basement that I over winter some of my water hyacinth in . He left it here years ago and has no place to keep this huge thing with a cabinet under it . I put it on wheels so come winter I can roll it over near a window and some roll it out of the way and empty it and clean it .I hate the thing but he has no room for it and no one seems to want it

I have a currently unused 20 gallon tank I am thinking of putting some of the floating plants in for the winter. I normally compost them, but would love to have a jump start on them next spring.

all you need to keep them alive is a small fish tank aerator or just a tiny pump to move and aerate the water , Otherwise they will dies . I have been overwintering water hyacinth for years Oh my gosh read my post I think I need a new keyboard as the letters are fading on this one

Careful the heron can still poke at them raise the grate 6 inches and you should be good. Herons are smart they will just wait for a surface swimmer and pluck him out.

Where and how do you get a grate. The heron we have is so mean!
It is made of panels sold for making guinea pig cages and lightweight shelves. I bought a box of 25 panels for around $20. They come with connectors but I wired them together. I wanted the wider mesh so our local frogs could still get in and out.
