pre filter

Does anyone use a prefilter on their pump? I have to clean mine every other day, if not it starts to starve the pump for water. I'm wondering if I'm just putting un-nessesary strain on the pump.I have no worries of leaves and cleaning it is not a problem as it gives me time with the pond and isn't hard.

i use a prefilter on mine but i took out the insides(media) actually 2 so i draw water from different areas of the pond

Not me, I pull the pump during times when the string algae is high or when a lot of leaves have made it to the bottom. This happens about 2 times a year.
