We have an established 500-700 gallon water garden. Plants and fish are there, as well as aeration. There is plumbing for a pump to move water from garden to waterfall about 4 feet up. I am looking for a pump to move the water. The one in there is much too powerful and falls over when in operation due to pressure. Is there a non-submersible pump that will meet our needs that will handle "dirty" water, as the one in there also "gunks" up frequently? My husband has even considered a pool pump/filter system. We have had an issue with algae, as it is in partial to full sun. Currently, plants are growing to cover most of the surface, so this will hopefully aid in this issue. We have used algaecide, only to kill fish several times.

Welcome @SandiR to the GPF! You will find lots of friendly and helpful pond lovers here who will help with your questions.

A few more details would be helpful - Fish, how many and what kind? You say the pond is from 5-700 gallons - do you know the measurements? Width and depth? How long has the pond been in place? Is this a lined pond or a preform? Is your current pump a combination pump and filter? Or do you have separate filtration? And a few pictures would be most helpful!

As you have learned, using algaecide can be deadly to fish. Algae should be approached as a symptom - it's not the root issue. If you have SOME algae, that's good. All healthy ponds need it. If you have TOO much algae, that means you have too many nutrients in the pond in the form of fish waste, excess food, or decaying organic matter. But in that case, too much algae is STILL good, as it's helping to keep your water healthy for your fish by consuming those nutrients that will otherwise be harmful. So figuring out WHY you have more algae than you would like to see is the goal - the rest will take care of itself.

As for your pump - again a picture would be most helpful. If you show us what you currently have you will get some good suggestions!
