How to calculate the head pressure for a pond pump? I'm currently building my first small pond for the backyard. Temperatures wont go below 10 degrees (50 F) in the coldest months, if that helps.

head begins at the pond's water surface not the pump... so all the plumbing above the water surface creates head. head is figured by the foot. for horizontal plumbing,10' is equal to 1 foot vertical. so if youve got 15' of horizontal plumbing and 4' of vertical.. you've got 5.5' of head. that covers plumbing..filters vary in head addition...gravity flow filters (down flow) do not add head. upflow add minimal head, pressure filters add more varying from model to model, plumbing size, and pump size.

Also depends on Size of piping or tubing, If you have a 1,000 GPH Pump, you will have more head using 1" tubing rather than 1-1/2", etc.
