Should the 55 gallon bio-filter be "pressurized"? How is the water supposed to leave the drum and travel to the waterfall? The ones I have seen have an open top on them which means they loose the pressure provided by the pump.

Your pond pump sends the water to the bottom and it rises until it overflows out a 2' fitting near the top. The only pressure you need is to get it from the pond to the bottom of the 55 gallon drum. Gravity sends it back to the pond.

The 55 gallon drum is inside the waterfall or above it.

Ahh, now I get it. I thought the water had to be pressurized from the drum to the waterfall.

if you are pumping your water from the pump to the barrel then you want the 2 in pipe above the waterfall but not at the top of the barrel. you want it in the middle or bottum. that way the is enofe pressure above the pipe flow to keep the water moveing. at the top with a two inch pipe you will find if it works at all a leaf will clogg it and drain your pond.
they are other ways though if you have BD or you can install a pipe threw the side of the pond for a retro BD.

both in and out pipes are located at the top of the filter, the in pipe is actually above the barrel and plumbed to the bottom inside the filter. either tee'ed or your inlet hose ending just inside a larger down pipe. this way it will break the syphon effect before it happens, if you use A TEE you and hard pipe, instead of the upper elbo, (per SKIPPY'S instructions) you can cap the empty end sticking up,drill, and insert a small diameter tube, to create a 'venturi' adding oxygen to the water. the out pipe is located a few inches from the top.

either way but open is preferred, throw a few water hiacynths on the top for some veggy filtering. exspecially if your using a stock tank. you can get a nice bunch in them.
