Just wondering about what is in rainwater that would expedite the growth of floating clumps of algae.

It is loaded with nitrogen. Not the specific scientific answer but that’s it in a nutshell. That is why farmers love lightning storms and snow.

Acid rain. Acidic water promotes algae growth. Our rain around Charlotte drives ponders nuts because it drops pH about 0,6 after a big rain. Happens every time.
