Hello pond friends. This morning, during feeding time, I noticed a pinkish/red sore (smaller than a dime coin) on his side, and a speck on the top of the head, of my 15” koi fish named Goliath. It is not opened, appears to be internal. His energy level and eating habits are normal. He and 10 smaller koi share my 1800 gallon pond for the past 2 months so I’m a novice.

Water levels (ph-7.5-8, ammonia-0, nitrite-0, and phosphorous-0) are all good. I maintain a good pump system and is well aerated with waterfall & 2 additional units. Have about 60% of pond covered with water lettuce and hyacinth for shade. Water temp is 88 degrees. I live in Orlando, Florida with average daily temp in the high 90’s.

I am open to any suggestions and pointers that can help me help Goliath. So far only Goliath has this issue. Is this something that could be contagious? Do I remove him from pond? Does he need to be taken to a koi vet specialist? Do I add any special meds? Thank you so much in advance.

Honestly, I would recommend you register at Koiphen.com . It is an all koi site, with a medical committee of trained koi keepers. Best of luck.

@Tula Whats wrong with the knowledge base available on this site then?, between us all we have years of experiance both in garden pond keeping and Koi keeping @Miga Milan... its been a while since I visited Orlando in my Naval days [I digress], could you please provide us with a clear photograph of the area in question , it could be anything from a simple damaged area where a scale has been knocked off or it could be a bacterial infection hopefully we'll be able to look and answer your questions

Dave, Nothing wrong with this site, but sometimes our koi folks are not around as much and I thought the OP could get immediate help, on Koiphen.

Hello Dave and thank you. I was unsuccessful in my attempt to catch Goliath by myself. I noticed the spot (soft pink) is still there and looks the same -no increase in color intensity or size-. I have just placed a small Go pro water camera that allows me to record up to 40 mins. at a time to see if I'm lucky enough to get a close view and get a screenshot of it. I'm also waiting to hear back from a local koi association as I have requested a referral to a koi vet in the area. Goliath still eating and behaving normally. He's always been one of the rowdy ones in the pond. Will continue to keep a close eye on him and the rest of the koi family.

Hello pond and koi friends! Just wanted to report that since yesterday I have noticed the pinkish side spot on Goliath has been fading away on its own. The pinkish speck above and near the head is no longer visible. His behavior and feeding habits have remained normal. All my other fish are good. My water levels are still where they need to be as well. Unfortunately, I have not heard from the local koi association regarding my request to a referral for a vet specialist and my interest in becoming a member so I will continue my research, will look into some good literature in the subject of koi, and will continue to use this forum. Many blessings.

Apparently your fish is healing on its own. This should be expected in most cases. All animals have the ability to heal without any human intervention and are usually stronger because of it.

AND, KOIPHEN, being a dedicated koi forum.... They have a larger group of koi people monitoring the boards which means a quicker response. They also specify [which I like to see] that people only submit answers to illness questions when they have something helpful to add. Unlike here, where a thread can get off-track and maybe, maybe not ever address the immediate issue of the OP.

In searching for an answer to any question on any topic, it is always best to get advice from as many knowledgeable sources as possible and then make an informed decision based on your circumstances. No one should be offended by this.

Yes, Dave it seems you were accurate. Unfortunately, our first attempt in setting an underwater camera was unsuccessful. We were unable to achieve a stable temporary setting for our Go pro camera to obtain a picture. My husband and I are planning to place a small camera inside our pond, in an non invasive manner, to be able to do command recording as well as surveillance at will using our cell phone. I can tell you today the spot is completely gone. Greetings from Orlando

PS: how (where) do I add the pond specific info (in the lighter color font) that I see many of you include in the area below the comment's box? thanks in advance

The lighter colored writing you see is in the member signature. Go to the right hand top of the main forum page and you will see "signature", just click on it and then add your info. It will then show up on all of your posts.
