After 16 or so “barren” years, my big, healthy, aged goldfish have reproduced. I now have the problem of rehoming 8 beautiful black goldfish. They need a pond to live in.
Please help if you can.

Many thanks, Brian Montague

Wow I've never had any of my black baby goldfish stay black forever. Some did for several years and then whamo they started turning to oj, yellow or beige or white. How old are these babies? Hope you can find them a good home!

I have a few black gold fish, now the bog is working I can see them. Some are actually quite big a couple of years old and still all black.

So what are rules about releasing fish into local rivers? is it a no?

That’s an absolute no. Releasing fish in native waterways can cause all kinds of problems down the road if they even survive that is.

Ok,

I don't really want the black ones, but I can't just kill them.. I doubt I can rehome them, any other options?

As a matter of interest, I see the Japanese koi breeder breed millions of fish but only few make the grade, what happens to the rest? or shouldn't I ask?

They cull the ones that don't make the grade. And yes, that means what you think it does. And they cull several times as the fish grow, since ones that might have looked promising at first can change as they grow.

Those black fish of yours very rarely stay black. Black fish are hard to see, so the color is a natural protection for small fish from predators. They gradually lose the black as they grow and turn to their adult coloring. But even adult goldfish can continue to change colors.

Don't discount them because they are black. That is usually a temporary color. It makes take some time for some of them to change, but they normally do.

I've had black before and as you say they do generally change colour , normally within a year, but these are older two or three years and still black.

I have had black ones that get quite large after a few years and then change to a nice pretty orange, yellow, cream, white etc. Never have I had any that stay black for over 5 years! I bet yours will all change!

I like the black, some are quite large. Some black with a bronze tinge. Been that way for years. Adds to the mix of colors.

These are all fish from a old little maintained pond I had. I have 5 or 6 dozen smallest gold fish the majority or only 4 or 5" long.

In the new pond which 6 times bigger, I want fewer but bigger fish and I will put a few koi in too.

So I do want to remove some.

Try giving away on Nextdoor.com, Craigslist etc.
